UK Sylvanian Families Collector's Club Magazine

I'm disappointed with the UK collector's club magazine.

The spelling and grammar errors are really irritating. I know it's not meant to be a glossy magazine where perfection is image and therefore everything. But surely they proof read it before publishing? Surely they have a spell checker of some description? Some of the small errors are just mind-numbingly annoying!

Children read the magazine, and it sets a poor example. I have sometimes been confused by what a sentence means, so I can only assume a child must be too.

In the recent issue, I was also annoyed to find that the same photographs had been used for the 'broken down' bus as a previous issue, and if I recall, they pretty much lifted the same text as well! They also used the promotional shots of the new Mulberry grandparents, which I suppose isn't a major issue, but it seems kind of lazy.

I am aware that it's only £9.99 a year, and yes, I only really joined for the figures. But I like looking at the glossy photographs. I like the illustrations. I like the 'how-to' articles. I like how this magazine captivates children and their families. But I feel like standards are slipping.

I don't know how the magazine is managed. It could quite well be that Beverly just does it all on her own in her spare time, and if that's the case, then I commend her.

Perhaps I'm just being an awful, disgruntled trainee journalist, who enjoys finding fault with publications much more than what she should (or is simply more aware of them...) Or maybe I'm just frustrated because I feel as if the magazine is capable of much more than what is currently offered.

What do you guys think?

I teach English. I'm always proofreading (except my own writing; it's that the way it always works?), and I agree that the Sylvanian Families magazine is awful. If they want it to be an official magazine for an official product line that is well-loved by collectors, the magazine should be taken more seriously.

I know it's for kids and not really adults, but that right there should be more reason to take it seriously. Teaching English is hard enough without poorly-written publications being branded "official" in the minds of children.

I read part of the first story, I found it confusing that the text in the pictures was a part of the story. I was reading it because I couldn't sleep, at least it made me tired.

When I first saw the cover, I was really excited, a new Duck family! Then I noticed it were just the Waddlingtons. Don't get me wrong, I love the Waddlingtons, but I'd love to see a new Duck family.

But like you said, I only joined the collectors club for the figures, this was my third magazine, only one to go before I can order the Seadogs emoticon I'm going to get the sister first.

Edit: English is only a second language to me, except for the internet, reading books and watching movies I hardly use it. If it's that badly written, I'd better not read it at all emoticon

Was there any pictures of new figures? emoticon

I really should join too to get the figures and the magazine. 15£ is not even that much, but somehow I always spend my SF-money on ebay... Darn :/

Nope, no new figures in this current magazine.

I just got the magazine yesterday and I was happy to have received it. I thought the story was cute even tho Bill Waddington seem to be an egocentric guy and has a temper. "Wanda!!" he always seems to be screaming after his wife when things don't go well. LOL!

Anyway, when you guys pointed out the errors and the quality of the magazine, it made me wonder who actually does this magazine in the first place? Is it the same people who runs the store in London? How many people worked on the magazine? Maybe that is a factor.

Hi Pangel,

You don't mean me, do you? I don't have anything to do with the magazine, except subscribe to it emoticon

Why did I write Beverly? Haha. I obviously had you on the brain, dear!

I meant "Belinda Brighteyes"... Sorry >_<;

Hi Pangel,

Glad you had me on your mind, but in a good way I hope emoticon

With the JP SF Club closing (probably due to declining membership and/or financial stresses) and the global economy still running poorly, UK club membership must be down. With those thoughts in mind, maybe we should be happy that the UK SF club is still publishing a magazine at all emoticon
