Hi from a mom who PLAYS with them as well as collects

Hi I'm a mom in the USA. I have a three year old daughter and I started collecting for her, and now am addicted to them myself. We do actually play with the figures, which I am sure will send shivers up the spine of dedicated collectors. But loading up the little guys onto boats, or cars, or toy hot air balloons to have grand road trip adventures, battling sea serpents, dragons, and a Sylvanian-eating Slinky monster while in search of treasure is just too priceless to pass up.

I have come to consider them somewhat the ideal toy for my daughter. We can have a large and varied collection because they are far smaller than stuffed animals or larger dolls. They can use many of the same accessories as my daughter's other favorite, the Littlest Pet Shop pets, as well as a good number of her Dora the Explorer small doll accessories---and that fact right there ends up saving us money and space. And unlike a lot of other small plastic toys these days, they don't seem to emit nasty plasticky fumes. Nor do they come loaded to the gills with commercial tie-ins or the Bratz dolls type of shallow sexualized fashion baggage in some of the other playsets popular with small girls these days.

They can be very expensive, but again, compared to stuffed animals and other types of toys, they compare fairly well.

Oh well, I thought I'd drop by and say hi. I've lurked here a couple of times and learned a lot from you folks, most especially where to buy the figures from. I prefer UK and JP versions to US versions of families, so finding reliable merchants was important to me, and you all came through for me on that point. A belated thank you to this forum.

Hi SmudgyCat

It's really awesome that you can enjoy Sylvanians with your daughter! I don't have any children yet (but I'm working on it...) and I hope to one day have a little girl who will love Sylvs as much as I do.

Welcome to the board.

Hello and welcome Smudgycat!!!

I couldn't agree with you more about the above. I love the timeless innocence that surrounds the world of sylvania.

Children can be made to grow up too fast! My daughter (7) and I play with our sylvanians too - my son (3) likes to pick them up and kiss them! much to the annoyance of my daughter who is rather protective/particular about how they are handled, (however the JP items I have started to buy are left in their boxes to be admired - they're MINE! emoticon LOL!).

Hello Smudgycat,

I could lie and say that I have a bunch of little one's running around that play with my Sylvanian's with me, however, I would be lying. emoticon The truth of the matter is, that I play with them all by myself most of the time. emoticon Although, when my "little baby girls: 27 & 22" come home to visit, they will play with me. My eldest daughter spent forever furnishing one of my houses when she was home at Christmas and had an absolute ball doing it. My youngest daughter has been doing nothing but talking about playing when she comes to stay with us while her husband is in Kuwait. As for me, I love my Sylvanian's and derive such pleasure out of them. My husband: 54 and my Son: 21, think the girls and I are a bit nutty, but have both suprised me with item's that I have wanted and hadn't yet purchased. I, myself, just turned 47 in March. I am one of those "collector's" that believes a toy should be played with and enjoyed. Anyway, welcome to the board.

Julia

Hi Smudgycat!

Im in your same situation. My near 4 year old daughter loves Sylvanian Families but still doesnt have the carefulness of an older child.
I think we are going to stick to buying older/used ones for playing with (she has SO much to play with now) and continue to buy stuff for MOM...and when she is older and likes to organize emoticon maybe I'll let her touch some of mine.

Hi thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Oh gosh, I hope I don't have to report next that I'm about to be divorced! emoticon I went kind of crazy at AngelSmile and Tamagoo's ebay shops the past couple of months. You can imagine the bills. However, as I keep pointing out to my husband, I cut my own hair--and our daughter's hair, buy new shoes once a year, and never more than 3 pairs--always on sale and less than $20 per pair (from Target, mostly), and am primarily a jeans and t-shirt or sweatshirt girl, so I am probably on a par with him and our friends budgetwise, only they all choose to spend their money on designer clothes or whatever, and I run around looking like something that fell out of the dumpster, with miniature cats and bunnies clutched in each hand.

Actually my husband is quite sweet about it all. The critters are small, and so it's a nice change from the stuffed animals I used to collect, which kind of took over the house.

Sorry to take so long to reply. Silly me, I forgot my log-in info, and then forgot which of my e-mail accounts I'd registered with.

I am so touched to read how the grown children still want to play with the figures when they come back for visits. I have seen so many children lose their sense of fun and childlike abandon trying to put on a mature facade to impress their friends. So it's delightful to read of grown children keeping in touch with their inner child and bonding with mom and dad over a shared hobby.

With my dad and myself, we bonded over Lionel trains. I'm slowly trying to learn how to restore the set he had as a child.

Hi Scatty, that is so very kind of you to offer such help.

I did wonder how long it usually takes for shipments to travel between the UK and the US (I'm smack dab on the East Coast of the US). I bought a fox baby and two sets of grey rabbit twins from Abacus toys ebay shop on April 2, and they were supposedly shipped out on April 4th, and after much waiting for an e-mail reply, I was told to allow 21 days for international shipments. Which I did--and they are STILL not here and I've yet to hear a response from email I sent two days ago and the one I sent earlier this morning.

21 days? Good gracious--it takes far less time between Japan and the US. Does that length of time sound correct to you or am I being duped?

 Hi SmudgyCat,

21 days is a little excessive for something to get to you from the UK. I also live on the East Coast (Florida) and have never had anything take that long to arrive from the UK. I am not familiar with Abacus Toy's myself so I don't know how reliable they are, but I would give it at least another week to arrive before taking any other steps. The package may very well have gotten sidetracked or held up in customs for some reason or another. Things like this happen, unfortunately.

Julia
