When the sun dies...
It will happen in about 7-8 billion years, so don't be worried about our generation dying. I mean, it says everywhere that earth will overheat and become molten again. So can we stop the world ending? What about all that happened here? In 7-8 billion years time will it be possible to move the earth to a new sun, again and again? Sorry, this may not be suitable and you probarly think I'm some kind of dooms-day crazy person.

Re: When the sun dies...
What a scary thought.
I'm still trying to figure out how the earth spins around the sun xD Because Finland is so north, in winter we don't see sun much (or at all). In summer it doesn't go down, sun shines long into the night.

Re: When the sun dies...
Eight billion years is a long freakin' time. It's over half the current age of the universe, and a bit less than twice the age of the Earth.
It's entirely possible humans won't exist by then. At least, none we'd recognize as such. And if humanity or its descendants managed to colonize other worlds by that point, odds are no one would even remember where Earth was or why it was important. Again: eight billion years is a long freakin' time.
In short, the good news: if there are people still around when the sun becomes a red giant, there's little chance of them becoming extinct. The bad news: if there are people still around when the sun becomes a red giant, there's little chance of anyone caring.

Re: When the sun dies...
I still don't get how humans could die out. The worlds pretty peaceful right now(Apart from Syria,etc...) But then global warming....I mean why was earth created and then in a LOOOOOONG time it will melt or something. Hey, by the time we're ready to die out technology will have to be able to do something! Come on earth sun-cream!!!

Re: When the sun dies...
Well, many different things could make us die out - and something eventually will, even if it's just evolution changing us so much that we wouldn't recognise ourselves as what we understand as humans.
Most likely we'll hasten our demise ourselves, though. My bet is on destruction of the planet by overpopulation and casual wasting of resources. This will bring both climate change and war, as we'll fight for the remaining resources. (And when I say "we" I am not talking this generation, but it's not far off.)
Sorry to be so negative, but that's how I see it after looking at the evidence.

Re: When the sun dies...
i agree mel. there is already so much fighting in the world. it has got alot worse in the last five years. i think these wars will cause alot of destruction and end up ruining their part of the world.
i dont think humans will be here in eight billion years. the dinosaurs died out and if we dont end ourselves, other things will, like climate change and their being no food to eat etc.
look at the weather now, its gone crazy in the uk. oct, it started raining then got really cold at end of nov. its been under 3 degrees since, except last week when i finally thought spring had come as it got warmer, double figures. but then yesterday it started snowing!!!!!
the film, the day after tomorrow, looks like a possibility!!!

Re: When the sun dies...
I really hope the world leaders meeting in Fermanagh (G8) have global warming at the top of their agenda. Because global warming probarly will be the min killer or the one that starts it all.

Re: When the sun dies...
I seem to remember in the 1970's that an Ice Age was what we all had to look forward to. Then there was the Y2K, where people were charging for survival lessons, there weren't enough computer programmers, planes were going to fall out the sky, chaos was going to reign, etc., etc.
By the way, in the 10th century Greenland was inhabited by vikings who settled and farmed there - the climate being much milder than it is today. So I just don't believe that the end of the world will come about through global warming. Me thinks it's more about trying to get more money out of us, charging us for all sorts of nonsense like carbon footprints, worrying about how much gas a cow emits?
I do believe we should live responsibly and take care of our environment in the sense that we don't dump toxic waste everywhere, save the rhino and all that but I'm not convinced about global warming.
