Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
I like look of flat hands, but open hands can actually hold things, which comes in handy when you're photographing figures in action poses or doing things.

I agree with you Beverly, that is why I prefer open hands too.

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
You're probably right about the JP releases being repackaged for the Australian market. I checked the bottom of the box and there were no character biographies, like UK releases usually have. The sitting Koala is dressed in a pink frilly dress like the JP version and not the blue of the Calico Critters version.

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
Maybe it could be interesting that we have in Italy the same Koala Family as the Australian one, with flat hands.
It is a new issue for 2013 such as the new Gray Cats (flat hands), the Friesian Cows (open hands), and the Elephants (open hands). It seems to confirm further that on 2013 the Families that were at first released in Japan have flat hands in other countries too, and the Families that were before realised in UK have open hands, even if they’ve been realised in Italy all together, all with EU packaging. Here are the pictures from the Italian Sylvanian Families website: http://sylvanianfamilies.it/catalog/categorieslist.php?category_id=1
Few pictures on catalogue do not entirely correspond with the actual Families in the Italian shops, but I also saw the Koala Family in two toyshops and they actually have flat hands and the standing baby has the little yellow dress.
The Chiffon Dogs Family has been here realised on 2012. It has open hands. The Twins, Baby Boy and Baby Girl were realised too, but they all already seem to be no more available in shops at the moment (The “Italian” Chiffon Dogs are pictured on my website:http://www.sylvanians.it/main_en_file/Page517.htm).

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
Sorry for replying to a somewhat old post, but I wanted to add that I purchased the CC Cottontail rabbit family at Toys R Us in New York just last week, and they have flat hands. They are definitely CC in the obnoxious pink CC packaging. Every picture I can find online of the CC Cottontails shows them with open hands, even on the Toys R Us website. But mine have decidedly flat hands. Very strange.

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
Yes, I find that very strange, too.
Just yesterday, I stopped by Toys R Us for a quick peek at the Calico Critters inventory and saw that some families have flat hands now - like the Cottontail Rabbit family, Border Collie family, Outback Koala family, and Hopper Kangaroo family. Even Rosie the Cat in the Row Boat set has flat hands. Most other families still have open hands but I am wondering if new families and sets will come in with flat hands and phase out the open hands??
The Calico Critters display at Toys R Us is interesting. In it, EVERY figure has flat hands. Even the Pickleweed hedgehogs has flat hands! And the Guinea Pig mother pushing the double stroller has flat hands. Hmm, curiouser and curiouser.

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
Flat hands will make my story writing really difficult.
And who is Rosie the cat?

Re: Flat hands in recent UK releases?
Very strange! I honestly didn't notice the flat hands on my Cottontails until I was posing them a few days later. I just didn't pay attention to it, because I thought all Calico Critters had open hands. If I had realized, I probably wouldn't have bought them and would have continued to look for an open-handed set, but oh well. I am not fussy enough to replace them now. I love them anyway.
For the record, I also recently purchased the guinea pig stroller set and the Pickleweeds, and they do have open hands. I have a few more items coming soon, and I'm curious to see their hands as well.
I imagine storytelling would indeed be more difficult with flat hands. I don't have a lot of props for my Sylvanians to hold yet, but I have my eye on a few sets. I hope my Sylvanians will be able to use them.
