Re: Sad Sylvanian news today

Just to clarify, we were not contacted but, I can say there were some people from manufacturers they were not really pleased with such leak-outs.

Previously around 2009/2010, there was a huge leak out by a member of this board regarding releases for the coming year, and as a result there was this big commotion, with people calling up the store. To the extent that we were threaten with legal action. Thus, we would to empathise that such news should not be leaked out by retailers or any employees connected with the companies because the implications can get serious.

I'm on the fence at the moment, til we hear back from something official. I would love SF to be more obtainable, but I still want it to keep that collector feel. I want it to keep that classic look (products and packaging). I don't want it to go bright pinkish colours if marketing decides its "girls toys" or something >< I'll miss seeing the blue packaging if they remove it.

I hope the figures that come out next get just as much detail done to them as they have in the past. Don't want to see them simplified or anything like that.

I would just like to take this opportunity to clarify now this thread has been re-opened that the information that I posted on Friday 28th was not a leak out and was 100% information that was obtainable to the general public via the internet and I appreciate that ianandjane has also pointed this out. I also edited my original post to provide a link to where this information was available.

The news was released on Friday morning and I saw this on at least 3 different 'toy news' websites before making my post in the afternoon on Friday (GMT). I didn't actually receive any 'privileged' information until Tuesday 2nd July when I received a letter from Flair regarding the Sylvanian Families.

I would hope that in the coming years the Sylvanian range will still remain as diverse and collectable as it is today. I personally do not believe that it is a 'one size fits all' brand due to the cultural variety/differences found in the countries where Sylvanians are sold. The packaging however may become more generic though as this does seem to be happening more with many products in the toy industry generally.

I think that the new packing, maybe will be like the ones, we know from the EU/European range. I still think that all releases in Japan, will have thier unique packing as we know of today.

This is of course only my own thoughts.

What I'd like to know is how this affects the club and future memberships/renewal? I love the Club and would hate to lose it with the transfer of distribution rights. While I understand Epoch's rationale for consolidating all their markets, I think it should be said that Flair is one of its best arms and deserves praise and recognition for keeping Sylvanian Families in the forefront of children's imaginations for so many years.

Sad news indeed.

I think we will end up getting similar packaging to the EU range now. I purchased the Victorian living room furniture set at the Whitchurch weekend and the packaging was of a similar colouring to the EU range, and the box was see-through as well. Wasn't like our UK blue boxes. If the link works this is the style packaging it came in [url][sign in to see URL]

Part of me is excited about EPOCH taking over, as Japan gets some awesome releases. But a part of me is worried that they won't keep up the brilliant work Flair has done over here. Will they still work closely with SSK? I have loved the extra figure sets they have done over recent years, and we have had extended families and new grandparents for families etc. I worry that all new playsets with figures will just come with Chocolate rabbits. I know we get some now, but looking at JP items it sometimes feels that Freya is only figure they give away in a new dress.

I wonder how Epoch feels about the USA Calico Critters?
I think it would be great if it was really just one brand, even though SF just wouldn't be so exclusive anymore to US collectors.

I would love it if Epoch took over International Playthings in the US.

Re: Sad Sylvanian news today

I do have to agree that it is a bummer that Flair lost Sylvanian Families because the Flair line is the most interesting when it comes to playsets. They really released a complete and cohesive product line each year- like the camping sets. And Flair was the line for furniture.

I was wondering about the club too, and the entire store for that matter. Is the Japanese and EU line large enough to stock a store?

That all said, International Playthings does not really know what they are doing with the Calico Critters product line. I wonder when their license with Epoch is up, but there are some other complications with Epoch in the States namely the Calico Critters vs. Sylvanian Families name. I wonder what will happen there? Rebranding, if Epoch can get the name back could be tricky and Epoch may not really want to deal with the Calico Critters name if they can't get the name back.

Hmm. Just was googling. Seems International Playthings is a subsidiary of Epoch. Epoch bought International Playthings in 2008. That adds some ripples to all of this. Now I don't know what to think.
