Re: Sad Sylvanian news today

So both Epoch UK and International Playthings are subsidiarys of Epoch? As Epoch has very little control over Calico Critters, they might not have much to do with Epoch UK either. Or perhaps they didn't like what Flair did, and want more control over UK sets.

Re: Sad Sylvanian news today

I for one think it's tragic that Flair have lost their licence. They've been fantastic bringing out interesting themes. Epoch are the distributors for South Africa as far as I'm aware and if their record is anything to go by then the news is grim. According to some retailers, Epoch want to control the items coming into South Africa so that the market isn't flooded. Well it will take years, if ever, to get the variety available like the UK.
Their website for South Africa says it all [sign in to see URL]
Even the Easy Buy stuff that everyone seems to like is not the same in South Africa as what's available in the UK. We have the same one's that have been available for years - how boring!
I've bought over 90% of my Sylvanians from the Flair line and for good reason.
When I've asked local retailer's why don't they have other houses, like the windmill, Hotel, or hospital, Sylvanian Games, Wedding sets, etc I get the same answer and that is that Epoch don't want to flood the market. When something new does come along it sells like hot cakes only because we have been starved for variety.

Just my thoughts on the subject. emoticon

MAS I couldnt say it better, Im bit worried too.

And the worst of all is that regardless of the fact that we dont get any buildings or nice shops, if they do release something good they discontinue the items within a year or so like the honeyfoxes and the monkeys.

Therefore Im forever thankful and in debt to my friends on the board that are willing to trade with me.

The stuff available in SA is way more interesting than the US line. I would love to be able to walk into a store here and buy some of the furniture pieces.

Here's a link to the Calico Critters product line

The new Christmas set and four newer carrying cases are not on this website, but that's the entire CC line. I think it's a pretty random lot of items, but my biggest gripe, and it has been for years, is that we have two kitchens but one of them doesn't come with a refrigerator. I really would like o be able to buy just a refrigerator! I know it's kind of stupid, but even in the CC line we get a new house pretty often, but have had the same furniture sets for years! If I want to set up more than one house, I'm missing a fridge. I could import one from UK or elsewhere but when all is said and done (price plus shipping), it's a rather expensive item for what it is and I'd rather save that money to set a different foreign item.

I wish they would just offer the entire basic product like and most families everywhere. I understand offering things like the royal wedding sets or Olympic sets in the countries where those things occurred, or offering Asian style food items and kimonos sets in Asian countries, but why can't we get a fridge a couch and a fountain in the US or SA or Australia? We all have fridges and fountains and couches. (Oh my!)

Flair probably lost the licence to market Sylvanian Families because they wouldn't pay Epoch enough money. These kinds of deals are always about maximizing a company's bottom line. Epoch very likely decided to go it alone without Flair to rake in more bucks (or yen, as the case may be). Whatever Epoch does, they will market research and look over product performance in their various markets very carefully, then sell stuff they believe will people will whole-heartedly buy in each area. That said, It would be very interesting to get a behind the scenes look at financial statements of some of the major toy companies. Judging by toy prices, I'm sure a few of them are making money hand over fist.

I had a look on the JP site today and I thought that Flair has a better range of items in just about everything. I just hope that we can still get the same items that we can get now. I don't really like having to get things off ebay because I find that a lot of the accessories are missing as they've usually been played with and had items lost, and it would probably hurt the company if a lot of the SF items that are available in the UK are discontinued.
