Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

My reasons are similar.

I go shopping when I'm depressed. It doesn't help that my best friend is also my enabler LOL. We try to keep each other in check, though.

I didn't have a whole lot growing up, so any toy that I did have was taken very good care of and adored with tons of respect. While I have three older siblings, they're from my father's first marriage and lived with their mother, so I didn't grow up with them. They were like cousins who stayed over occasionally.

Because of this, my toys were most often my friends, each having a name and personality that I can remember to this day.

Collecting anything helps me live through my childhood again, but it's hard for me to let some of my "friends" go. Knowing this, I try not to get TOO much stuff.

It doesn't always work out that way, though! LOL emoticon

I'm also an adult collector like Candy who has had them since [sign in to see URL] 1986 I was in 5th grade. I don't feel the need to have everything and probably look around online once a [sign in to see URL] something once every month or 2.
Sometimes just looking can [sign in to see URL]'s like window shopping. emoticon

My goal right now is to fully catalog what I have with photos ( I don't really like taking pictures and uploading them). I recently took a food photography course to help my food photos get better (I'm a chef) so hopefully this will inspire me.

I also have a 9 year old daughter who loves Sylvanians so we share a collection now. Its another way we connect. I'd rather her play with these figures because it's a very wholesome and loving community. I often tell my husband that if/when modern life and technology no longer become viable because there are no longer fossil fuels, we will all need to learn how to live like they did in vintage Sylvania. It's a utopian inspiration for me.

Petite Cherie, you'll know what's best for you and your family. I'm hoping your little girl will love them too. Just dont let them play with your favorites under the age of [sign in to see URL] have a JP Koala student brother with almost all the flocking off the head because she drooled on him as a 2 year old. My sister bought it for her from [sign in to see URL] kept saying "mine" emoticon

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I collect Sylvanians because it makes me happy.
 emoticon
I have PCOS and my hormones are out of balance, making me sick most of the time. After our little surprise pregnancy with my son (after the doctors all said that it would never be... emoticon emoticon emoticon ), I started having trouble with my back and hips.
Baby grew to be 4,56kg at birth and carrying all that weight around took a big toll on my body. I now have sciatica and find myself paralyzed some mornings with no way of getting out of bed on my own... emoticon Other days are better and I can even be quite productive if my body allows me to! emoticon

Before this, I lead quite an active life - camping, geocaching and going to the shooting range with hubby. But, for the last few years, this has changed and I find myself stuck at home most of the time.

The big thing about SF, is that they are never stuck inside a house because it hurts too much to drive anywhere. They don't forget about their friends because they can't go out with them, and they don't judge me if I exchange my jeans for pj's after lunch! emoticon
They keep me sane sometimes, just because they give me something to do without hurting myself or fainting in a public place because something triggered a hormone fluctuation.

I also find that it gives me and hubby a common ground. On the days when I am so blue that the world could end and I couldn't care less, all he has to do is mess up a family's names, rearrange my display, or open one of the doors to my display without deactivating the alarm first... emoticon (Yes, the display now has a very shrill alarm. And, YES it is necessary!!!) And instantly he has something to make me smile.

We also have a rule that I can only buy SF with the money from my piggy bank, which encourages me to save in stead of going for instant gratification.
At this stage, collecting SF is working for me. And I do hope that I will be able to continue my hobby for many years to come.

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I can relate too. I started buying Calico Critters for my granddaughter's 3rd birthday just because I thought they were cute and they had so many different families and homes, etc. Her dad/my son liked them too and put the houses together for my granddaughter and was impressed by the lights and small details. After that first purchase I got many more for her that Christmas. Then about 6 months later on June 9, 2011 my son was killed in a motorcycle accident and obviously I've tried to "escape reality" in different ways. My granddaughter spent much more time with me after her daddy died and once I stared looking online to buy critters and found out the whole story about Sylvanian's I started to go crazy buying and bidding. I had packages coming in every day and I'd feel guilty because my husband thought I was spending too much and obsessed. But I kept doing it and like Petite Cherie I began to keep my favorite or the rare ones in a place that my granddaughter couldn't find them. When I had to pack them up to move this past summer I realize how out if control I'd gotten when I was filling up box after box. I had cut down a lot because of that but now I've been starting to buy again. (We'll my granddaughters birthday is in a few weeks so that's an excuse right)?
But they do bring me joy and I love watching my granddaughter play with them (not mine though). I'm really glad you brought this subject up Petite Cherie because I know it's a reaction to the trauma but it could be a lot worse. There are many other things people use to deal with trauma and if we're using Sylvanian's I'd say we're more fortunate than most.
Thanks everyone for sharing your reasons.
Tracy

Thank you all for sharing your insights and experience. I have learned a lot by reading your comments here.

@Tracy: I am so sorry Tracy to read about your son. I am 100% sure he is in a better place now and he would be proud to see how much you are close to his daughter. Hugs xoxoxo

@LadyLollipop: I feel for you! My own health went down since the birth of my baby as well and I am now having high blood pressure which never happened to me before! I heard from the doctor that I can change this if I follow a certain diet and work out regularly. I hope you will too find a solution to your condition!

I have been selling away most of my "other toys" and I am putting myself on a tight budget but I am keeping my present Sylvanian collection. I am planning to make that village (since months now) but it looks like it's finally becoming reality.

I think I am enjoying the hobby a lot and that if I didn't spend that time on dollhouse and toys, I would be busy thinking about negative things so building this village will be a way for me to create something fun for myself and my children.

I hope I'll be able to show you the completed village around Christmas time emoticon

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I loved collecting Sylvanian Families and other vintage toys. I had a garage dedicated to them. It was my little happy zone. I began collecting when I took a year out of University because of illness, and it was an emotional crutch. I also justified my collecting in hopes I would have children to share them with. Whilst I managed to mass an amount in a relatively short period (3 years) it was all done through clever purchasing, which was also part of the fun, too!

Unfortunately a change of circumstances meant I had to begin selling my toys. I had moved back into my parent's house due to a break-up with no room to display them or realistically store them - then my parents were struggling financially with their business. As a result I lost my job, and I needed to learn to drive and buy a car to give myself independence.

Many of my toys have either gone on to other collectors here on this forum, or have been given to children as presents which makes the transition a little easier.

The thing I loved most about collecting was it brought me closer to other like-minded people, and the friends I have made through this forum will last forever. :-)

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I didn't have an idyllic childhood but I had a very happy one. I have always been stuck with my head in the clouds and my imagination is always so huge - life, in my head, can be such a beautiful place and I place it wholly on my playing with the many of cute toys I had when I was younger. I think Sylvanian Families and Teeny Weeny Families stick out as my favourite as they weren't that common in South Africa, where I lived until I was 12. My only other obsession was my horse toys, being a horse rider, but I believe my love lies more in the horse books I used to have as a child... if I could impart the joy, love and affection I felt for all 150 (yes that's right!) horse and pony stories I had as a girl I'd be the happiest writer on the planet.

So I collect to hold onto that piece of my childhood but I also collect because I've always retained a small part of my childhood in my heart and so have always loved toys. I like all aspects of collecting Sylvanians; from hunting out rare items, to village making, to storytelling, to just looking at them all with such happiness. I think what makes me enjoy them even more (and I echo Pangel's thoughts) is the new friends I have made, both afar and close to me... if it weren't for Sylvanians I would not have some od the special friends I have now.

While I enjoy it, it'll stick around. Luckily mine is not attached to my depression - in fact this year, whilst I went through the worst hellish episode of depression of my life, they were all packed away and I distanced myself from them - I don't like mixing up my child-like happiness with an adult sadness. Or at least I fell in the trap of letting my depression mirror my eating habits, and some attachments you'll never be free of, so some of my joys are distanced (not forgotten) whilst I'm focussing on rebalancing myself.

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I always wanted to collect SF when I was really little, they are so charming! Six years ago, that dream came true! I am putting an end to buying SF (Mum says a lot makes me feel over loaded and overwhelmed, ever too much furniture in a house, I agree). Don't worry, I'm selecting my favourites stuff and getting those and then (trying) to stop. BUT, I have an agreement with Mum that if they ever release an older brother chocolate rabbit, I am getting it first sight! And of course if they do non - Japanese clothes, even she wants! Non - Japanese clothes are high priorities for me! And maybe an older sister Kangaroo..... Maybe be not....

But yeah, I collect because I love and it makes you feel so happy and (I wont say kid all over again, because I'm a kid, so that wont work out!) so cuddly in Sylvania! It's so happy and sweet and peaceful!

Best Wishes,

Francesca C

(Still thinking of a name for my city, it's so pretty!)

Re: Why do I keep buying Sylvanian Families toys???

I am an adult, 25 years old.

I grew up with Sylvanian [sign in to see URL] remember spending hours playing with them. We couldn't afford any houses so my thread bare fox family lived in a glass jar turned sideways (it was a sort of fox hole I guess)..

Anyway I recently rediscovered them in a toy shop. I thought they were so cute and I was nostalgic. I bought the Sister at home set, I thought it could sit on my desk at home. Then I saw the ambulance a little while later (I am a nurse) and my boyfriend got it for me. Then the paramedic and patient...

I love the toys. I love the idea that their are these happy little animals who live in a happy little place with no worries. I like the variety and I'm impressed with the detail of them.

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment and am running out of space. I usually set up displays for holidays, like decorating the log cabin for Halloween. I think its a cute centerpiece. I don't care if people think I'm a baby or immature. I AM A COLLECTOR I tell people ;-)

Also when I have kids I think it will be nice for us to play with them together. My boyfriend is also [sign in to see URL] says they are dumb but he always seems to know when new ones come out and eagerly helps with my displays!!
