State of the Sylvanian Market

As a buyer and seller of Sylvanians, I keep a close eye on the market trends and popularity of Sylvanians and Calico Critters. And I just thought you all might like a few notes on what I've noticed.

For about the past two years, Sylvanian collecting have seen a small slump, after having a major upsurge in popularity between 2003-2005. We lost a lot of major collectors to chat with and the value of some figures went down.

But I have good news, I think popularity of collecting may be growing again. I've been hearing from old collectors that have returned to collecting, and lots of new collectors have come on the scene. And finally, 2007 is a good year for new figures, as we've seen lots of new families-- but almost as important, for the first time in several years, Flair has NOT gone overboard and flooded the market with remakes (a major turn off to collectors). I think secondary market prices are rising again, though it is still slight.

The most sought after families right now seem to the the Bullrush Frogs and the Bamboo Pandas. Urban Life has really lost its momentum, but figures in mint or near mint condition have held their value. Early Japanese figures and Urban Life in good condition have become next to impossible to find; and though their prices haven't surged yet, I expect them to as this new wave of collectors discover the higher quality of the Japanese line.

I've also just determined that we have a new champion for rarest family-- Congrats to the US Calico Critters Meadows Mice family. Meadows mice (specifically the brother and sister) are now more difficult to find even than the elusive UL Maroon dogs. Believe me, I've looked. I haven't seen a set up for sale in nearly 2 years.

So those are some of my thoughts. Let me know if you have questions, I'm happy to tell more abut what I think is going on in the collecting world.

Oh, and by the way, the Figure Shoppe opens Saturday, May 5th! And if the last one was any indicator, get there quick! As more people collect, the items just sell faster.

Happy Collecting!

-Wendy

Glad to hear things are in an upswing. Maybe this means more people will be interested when I finally get around to translating the other games in the Sylvanian Families series.

It'll certainly mean a bit more life around here, that's for sure. ^_^

I put Sylvanians up for sale on my website every other month, and at the same time send an e-mail list out of everything that is available for sale. There are usually around 200 figures and furniture sets available, most are rare, retired, hard to find. If you want to sign up, e-mail me at [email protected].
